Find my Walloon grantsWallonia’s grant ecosystem: underused but powerful
The Walloon Region channels business support through three main bodies: SPW Économie (Chèques-Entreprises consulting subsidies), SOWALFIN (loan guarantees and co-financing), and AWEX (export and internationalisation support). Together they cover consulting, investment, export, and access to financing.
Why are Walloon grants underused by SMEs despite strong availability? Complexity of the Chèques-Entreprises system, the accreditation requirement for consultants, and lower awareness compared to VLAIO’s streamlined programs. Companies that navigate the system find generous subsidy rates — up to 75% for micro-enterprises.

SME status
Most SPW programs target small and medium enterprises. Micro-enterprises receive the highest subsidy rates (up to 75%).
Valid KBO number + no outstanding debts
Active KBO/BCE registration and no outstanding social security (ONSS) or tax debts. Non-compliance blocks all applications.
Chèques-Entreprises explained
The Chèques-Entreprises system is SPW’s main consulting subsidy for Walloon SMEs. It operates through 6 types of cheques, each targeting a different business need:
Strategic cheque
Business strategy, growth plans, market analysis
HR cheque
Recruitment, training plans, workforce organisation
Digital cheque
Digitalisation strategy, cybersecurity, e-commerce
Environmental cheque
Energy efficiency, circular economy, sustainability
Financial cheque
Financial planning, funding strategy, cash flow
Export cheque
Export strategy, market entry, internationalisation
Subsidy rates: 75% for micro-enterprises, 50–65% for small companies, 35–50% for medium enterprises. Annual cap per company per cheque type.
The most common mistake: starting the consulting mission BEFORE the application is approved. SPW rejects all retroactive requests — wait for formal approval before beginning work with your consultant.
