Grants for Businesses in Flanders
Flanders has Belgium’s most developed SME support programme, driven by VLAIO (Vlaams Agentschap Innoveren & Ondernemen). Together with PMV, FIT, and imec, the region offers dozens of tailored programmes for Flemish entrepreneurs — from training subsidies to millions for research and development.

VLAIO (Vlaams Agentschap Innoveren & Ondernemen) is Flanders’ central agency for innovation and entrepreneurship. It coordinates the majority of business support: the KMO-portefeuille for training and advisory, the KMO-groeisubsidie for growth, O&O subsidies for research and development, and the Strategische Transformatiesteun for major investments. In addition, PMV (Participatiemaatschappij Vlaanderen), FIT (Flanders Investment & Trade), and imec provide supplementary funding and support.
Flanders has Belgium’s most developed SME support system. Whether you’re a startup, a fast-growing scale-up, or an established company looking to innovate, VLAIO and partners offer grants ranging from a few thousand euros to several million. VLAIO vs other agencies
VLAIO is the central point of contact for business support in Flanders, but it’s not the only player. PMV offers loans and equity stakes, FIT supports export and internationalisation, and imec facilitates innovation partnerships. You can also combine Flemish grants with federal support (e.g. R&D tax credits) and EU programmes (Horizon Europe, EIC Accelerator). BelGrant helps you see the full picture.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a VLAIO application take?
Timelines vary by programme. The KMO-portefeuille is processed within a few days. The KMO-groeisubsidie typically takes 4 to 8 weeks. R&D subsidies can take 2 to 4 months depending on project complexity.
Can I combine VLAIO grants with other subsidies?
Yes, within the maximum allowed aid intensity under EU regulations. You can combine VLAIO with federal or EU grants, provided you declare all public funding in each application.
What is the difference between KMO-portefeuille and KMO-groeisubsidie?
The KMO-portefeuille funds one-off services (training, advisory, coaching) up to €7,500–€15,000/year. The KMO-groeisubsidie is a larger grant (€10,000–€50,000) for strategic growth projects such as internationalisation or digitalisation.
Does BelGrant replace a VLAIO advisor?
No. BelGrant helps you quickly identify the programmes you qualify for and understand eligibility criteria. For dossier preparation and personalised guidance, a VLAIO advisor or approved consultant is still recommended.
