Startup Grants Belgium — Funding for Early-Stage and Growth-Stage Companies
Belgium is one of Europe’s strongest startup grant ecosystems — yet most Belgian startups underuse the funding available to them. Three pillars support early-stage companies: non-dilutive grants (you keep 100% equity), soft loans (cheap capital with favourable terms), and coaching programs (free strategic guidance).

Non-dilutive grants
Direct subsidies you never repay and that don’t cost you equity. Innoviris PoC, VLAIO O&O, and KMO-groeisubsidie are the flagship programs.
Soft loans
Below-market interest rates with flexible repayment. PMV Startlening, Win-winlening, and SOWALFIN offer capital without bank-level requirements.
Coaching programs
Free mentoring, market validation, and business model support. hub.brussels, VLAIO advies, and Wallonie Entreprendre guide startups from idea to market.

The most common mistake Belgian startups make
Applying for funding too late. Most Belgian grants require application BEFORE starting the project or service. Startups often discover grants after spending money they could have been reimbursed for. Check eligibility before you spend.

Frequently asked questions
Can a startup without revenue apply for Belgian grants?
Yes. Programs like Innoviris Proof of Concept and PMV Startlening are specifically designed for pre-revenue companies. You need a registered company (KBO number) and a clear project plan, not existing revenue.
What is the difference between Innoviris PoC and PoB?
Proof of Concept (up to €100K) funds the validation of an innovative idea — prototyping, feasibility, market testing. Proof of Business (up to €250K) funds the next step: turning a validated concept into a commercially viable product or service.
How long does it take to receive startup grant funding?
PMV Startlening can be approved within 4–6 weeks. Innoviris PoC takes 2–3 months for evaluation. Larger programs like EIC Accelerator have fixed cut-off dates and take 4–6 months. Plan ahead — apply at least 3 months before you need the funds.
Can I combine a Belgian startup grant with venture capital?
Yes. Belgian grants are non-dilutive, so they don’t conflict with equity rounds. In fact, having grant funding often strengthens your VC pitch because it validates your project and reduces the capital you need to raise.
Do I need to be a Belgian citizen to apply?
No. You need a company registered in Belgium with an active exploitation unit in the relevant region. The founder’s nationality is not a criterion for any major Belgian startup grant program.
